Tackling Imbalance of Bargaining Power: EP aims to strengthen protection against unfair trading practices in the EU

AIM welcomes the European Parliament Agriculture Committee’s decisive vote to enhance the enforcement of the Unfair Trading Practices (UTP) Directive across borders. With 44 MEPs in favour and just one against, the vote underscores the urgent need for fair, predictable, and enforceable rules within the Single Market. This reform introduces key mechanisms such as a rapid alert system, enhanced accountability for extra-EU buyers, and legal clarity on the application of national protections—ensuring that fairness isn’t confined by borders.

The vote also highlights the growing concern over the outsized power of European Retail Alliances, whose practices often undermine suppliers, including farmers and manufacturers. AIM urges the European Commission to take this momentum into the 2026 UTP Directive revision, by eliminating the EUR 350 million turnover threshold and harmonising rules across the EU. It’s time to ensure that fairness and a level playing field are guaranteed for all producers—regardless of size or location.
