Revising the Unfair Trading Practices Directive: Fairness for All and a Stronger, More Competitive Single Market

Positions
4 Mar 2026

AIM’s position paper calls for a stronger revision of the EU Unfair Trading Practices (UTP) Directive to reflect increased retail concentration and the growing power of European retail alliances. It argues that unfair trading practices and fear of retaliation continue to harm suppliers, weaken investment and innovation, and distort the Single Market. AIM proposes removing turnover thresholds, extending the rules beyond agri-food to all consumer goods, strengthening cross-border enforcement, and explicitly prohibiting commercial coercion, retaliation, and private-label self-preferencing to ensure fairer competition and greater competitiveness across EU supply chains.
