AIM, the European Brands Association, and 39 other trade associations representing multiple economic sectors, packaging manufacturers and retailer organisations launched today a joint position paper calling for an EU harmonised system for consumer sorting instructions.

The revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD) represents an important opportunity to define an EU harmonised labelling scheme for sorting instructions and put an end to the increasing distortions through national schemes. The broad endorsement of this proposal is a strong signal that the multitude of national packaging sorting instructions is not helping to improve consumer awareness nor recycling. The proposal indicates the principles needed to develop a clear and simple system, harmonised at EU level, which could leverage the most effective features of existing national schemes.
